As seems to be more the case the past couple of years for many events - it has had to be cancelled due to bad weather conditions on the course. The final was hotly contested for the first 500m but by the finish line the Newark crew were 5 boats lengths clear from opposition from Manchester University, Cardiff, Durham University and others. The crew now move up to Senior four status at their first attempt. They are coached by Paul Fenhoulet.

Friday saw the boys J14 4x+ with Callum Jones, Tom Selby, Jake Buil, George Greenfield and coxed by Annabel progress through the processional qualifier into the semi-finals. They came 3rd in the semi and took their well deserved place in the final against some very tough opposition. They came a very creditable 6th with a personal best time for 1km - knocking off some 20 seconds on their previous pb.

Saturday was another story. The weather took a turn for the worse and became very nasty with high winds. Nick Parnell was withdrawn from his CH 1x for safety reasons and took no part in the competition. The girls J15 4x+ competed in their processional race and came 12th but all further racing was cancelled. Boats continued to race in all the processional races but Claire and Andy ended up on rescue duty on the pontoons for 3 hours trying to get crews safely out of the water. All boats were coming in with crews up to the saxboards in water. All crews should be congratulated - even with no one paddling all boats were pushed at high speed towards the landing stages and had to be "caught" to slow them down.

The other entry - MNov 4+ made it through the first round but were knocked out in the second.
May 30th Boats & Blades
Over the next few weeks there will be notices going up around the club about boat and blade allocation for different crews / sections. Everyone should make sure they adhere to these notices to make the running of all groups smooth and fair. In particular, sets of blades have been allocated to different groups at specific times and so whilst others are perfectly welcome to use them outside these times, they must return the blades to their original gearing as specified on the notice board and blades should ideally be put back on the racks in sets. Blades other than the pink, green & yellow handled sculling blades will be clearly identifiable with different coloured tape.

Please speak with the Captain, or any of the coaches if the Captain is not available, if you require any help with blades or boats.

With regards to the care and maintenance of club equipment - more care and vigilence is now going to be expected of all crews. The cleaning down of boats should not only include a proper wash of the hull (not the very often quick hose down) but also the washing of the interior as well including the runners. Also blades should ideally be washed down - including the handles.

Please will all crews perform a check of the boat before and after every outing to make sure everything is as it should be. If there are washers, heel restraints and the like missing then please report it to a coach or write the details down in the book that will soon be provided on the signing out desk.

With increasing numbers of crews taking to the water during the busy periods of Saturday and sunday mornings, it would be appreciated if boats are not stripped of equipment to repair or replace things in other boats. There have been cases recently where runners, stretchers, shoes etc have been removed from boats used by regular competing crews - even private equipment has been removed and / or gone missing. When time on the water for coached sessions is short, then this is extremely irritating and distressing for those left struggling to get a boat useable again before an outing.

And please leave the private boats and blades alone unless they are yours or you have permission for their use. A set of private concept blades has recently been re-geared and a new private boat had it's foot stretcher loosened to such an extent that the installation was almost hanging free. This behaviour is not funny and not considered a joke with blades retailing at £320 and a new Sims single £5500.

July 7th The Club has a world record holder! 2km in 07:12:07 for J12 boys
At 10:00 Junior sculler, Callum Jones, broke the 2km World and Great Britain Ergo records at the Concept2 head quarters in Nottingham. He had previously broken both records in June but needed to get the records witnessed by Concept2 to make them official.

His pace maker was Nick Parnell, also of Newark Rowing Club, who sat alongside him on an ergo to help keep him focussed on the job and to give him someone to chase. Also there to support him was his father, Mark Jones, grandparents, school friends and the club's junior men's coach Claire Parnell who monitored the splits to make sure he kept on target. It was very close and very tense! The 500m splits were not as consistent as in the practice 2km a few weeks earlier which was a bit unexpected. The lads had a race plan but when we saw what was happening with the splits, the plan had to be changed mid-race. With a lot of shouting and encouragement he finished just under the old record, held by Croatia.

Callum's achievement cannot be over-stated or under estimated. He has shown great strength of character and determination to succeed. Looking at the monitor this morning, an on-looker would maybe have thought he's not going to make it. But anyone who knows Callum knew there was no question of him not breaking the records.

Callum has also proved an inspiration for the rest of the JM-14 group - Jake Buil made a personal best last week of 07:16, George Greenfield made 07:18, Tom Selby has a pb of 07:40 and cox Dominic Parnell (aged 12) made 07:58. The group works on gradual & sustainable long-term improvement. To a by-stander a lot of messing about and ill-discipline may seem the order of the day, but behind the scenes the lads get the work done and find the balance of enjoyment and hard work. They are entitled to run around, make a noise and get up to mischief!!

Their next major challenge for both the boys and the girls at the club is Nat Champs next week and then training starts early this year for BIRC.

17th July National Championships of Great Britain
A small team from Newark entered.
26th July St Neots Regatta
Multiple wins for both girls and boys during a screaming hot weekend.
The junior team decided to make a weekend of it and camped at the lovely riverside park. It was a screaming hot weekend and everyone had a great weekend.
Saturday wins:
J13 1x Dominic Parnell
J14 2x Tom Selby & George Greenfield
J15 4x+ Tom Selby, George Greenfield, Jake Buil, Tom Bond, Dominic Parnell
MS3 4+ Nick Parnell, Edward Cottell, Sam Bonser, Ollie Saunders, Dominic Parnell
WJ14 1x Hannah Wright
WJ15 2x Hannah Wright & Phoebe Howlett

Sunday Wins:
J13 1x Dominic Parnell
WJ14 1x Hannah Wright
WJ15 2x Hannah Wright & Phoebe Howlett

The notable win of the weekend was in the men's novice sculls with Rob Oakley claiming victory over 15 other entries. This was Robs' first attempt at novice sculls. Rob won 3 rounds against scullers older than himself to reach the final and then went on to win by 4 lengths cheered by the Newark team from the bank. The St Neots representatives congratulated him on a superb and well deserved win. We wish Rob every success in his future senior sculling career.

Dominic Parnell (still only a J12 sculler even though he has been racing for 2 years now) impressed his competitors on both Saturday and Sunday and was far and away the best J13 sculler leading every race by multiple boat lengths. He won all his rounds with a verdict of easily. Over the 2 days he competed in 7 races (2 of which he coxed).

Other notable performances were made by:
Kate Selby in WJ16 1x on Sunday where she was a canvas behind a fast York City sculler. Kate only started sculling in March and this was her 3rd race;

Tom Selby raced in a gripping final against Jarman of St Neots and narrowly missed the win on the line as Jarman caught him in the last few strokes. This is Toms' first single sculls race in the last 18months;

Nick Parnell reached the final of the Novice sculls on Saturday but narrowly lost out to a Stratford sculler. However, in the S4 sculls on Sunday he beat the Stratford sculler convincingly and should have gone on to win the S4 event but following a foot operation last week was struggling with pain and had to scull home in considerable pain in the second round.
9th & 10th Aug

Peterborough Summer Regatta
Newark's Senior 3 coxed four produced stunning performances when it mattered at the Peterborough Regatta.
They became nick named the Schoolboy Crew and shocked many of their competitors and clubs.

Nick Parnell (17), Sam Bonser (16), Edward Cottell (16) and Ollie Saunders coxed by 12 year old Dominic Parnell won all their races in style to become a well deserved Senior 2 crew at the end of the 2008 regatta season.

Their toughest race was during the Sunday's 500m sprint. They reached the final as fastest qualifiers but were in a nail biting fight with Thames for the lead all the way down the course.

At the 250m mark Thames managed to pull ahead but Newark cox Dominic Parnell watched them like a hawk & called the shots with the Newark boys putting in a break for the finish line in the dying stages of the race. Both crews were given the same time but Newark had the advantage and were easily clear.

Saturday saw the crew being one of the slowest into the final of the 1000m event but again some mature coxing and gutsy rowing saw them take the win with an astonishing time of 3:17 for the 1000m race. Peterborough declared it to be one the fastest S3 races they'd had at the regatta. They were faster than the S2 4+'s and were 1 second off the S3 4+ course record help by Nottingham Boat Club at 3:16.

Bow Edward Cottell, 2 Ollie Saunders, 3 Nick Parnell, Stroke Sam Bonser cox Dominic Parnell
Collecting another set of trophies at Peterborough on the Sunday

Nick Parnell and Sam Bonser also entered the MNOV 2x and reached the finals in style. This was the first time Nick and Sam have raced together in a double and they won the final easily by 7 seconds to become S4.
